     802.11n Wi-Fi standard finalized

    nina Published in the 16:39:04

As predicted last month, IEEE approved the final 802.11n standard, high-bandwidth wireless local area network.

To finalize the new standard for wireless networking - which is capable of delivering throughput speeds of up to 300 megabits per second (or even above) - took exactly seven years since the day it was conceived, or six years from the first version of the project. Standard has been through a dozen or so versions of the project.

News of the ratification broke through a blog map e-mail sent Bruce Kramer, who had long been chairman of 802.11n task group, task force members. There was no public statement yet. Updating PDT 5:49 pm: press release was issued.

(802.11n Task Force is part of the 802.11 working group, which monitors the WLAN (wireless LAN) standards. The task force members include the majority of Wi-Fi chips, software developers and suppliers of equipment OEM. Meru Network, one of the members, published in blog that broke the news.)

Probably, however, that final approval of the standard will be announced on September 15, the date when the action network aims at a public webcast to provide answers to questions about ratification.

In accordance with the Wi-Fi Alliance, a group that tests and certifies wireless products to ensure their compatibility, all existing Wi-Fi Certified Draft N wireless products will work with the final standard.

802.11n offers a much higher rate than the previous, already ratified the 802.11g, which only caps at 54Mbps. Due to the high rate of convincing a majority of wireless providers offering refuge 802.11n-compatible (also known as Wireless-N) production in the past six years, and encouraging their Draft N products. Now the project no longer exists.

In accordance with the Wi-Fi Alliance, most, if not all, existing equipment can be upgraded to the final specification through firmware upgrade. Finally, the whole future of wireless networking products will be compatible with the products today that have Wi-Fi-certified.
