Maldives has signed a partnership with technology companies to develop their Biochar soil, both sides announced this week.
Biochar, the method of carbon capture and storage is usually done by heating the biomass in the oven until it turns into an artificial coal. This Biochar can then be buried according to enrich the soil for agriculture. In some cases, Biochar can be used as fuel.
The deal with the British Carbon Gold was part of the Maldives' to be carbon-neutral by 2020.
With carbon gold, the Maldives will produce Biochar of woody biomass, including coconut shell, for use in their own land. As part of the deal, Carbon Gold will also begin an information campaign aimed at the Maldives on the benefits of Biochar instead of imported fertilizers to improve soil quality for agriculture.
"Maldives has already affected by climate change, so I warmly welcome this relationship with the Carbon Gold. Biochar plays a crucial role in helping us to achieve carbon neutral status, as well as providing economic and environmental boost our people," Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed said in a statement.
