28-year-old Miami man who made millions of hacking computer networks and steal credit card numbers, pleaded guilty Friday and agreed to lose more than 2,7 million dollars in restitution, as well as condos, jewelry, and a car.
Alberto Gonzales, former federal government informant and the alleged ringleader of one of the largest known cases of identity theft in U.S. history, pleaded guilty (as expected) to 19 counts of conspiracy, computer fraud, fraud, access device fraud and aggravated identity theft involving the theft of credit and debit card data from TJX Company (owner of TJ Maxx), BJ's Wholesale Club, OfficeMax, Boston Market, Barnes & Noble, Sports Authority, among other retailers.
Gonzalez, along with 10 others from the United States, Eastern Europe and China, were charged in August 2008 to break into the retail network of credit card payment through Wardriving (search for unsecured wireless networks while driving by with a laptop), as well as installing interceptor program data capture.
He also pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit fraud associated with the network breaks into Dave & Buster's restaurant chain. He was accused that the charge in New York in May 2008.
Gonzalez still faces charges in New Jersey of conspiracy to steal credit card numbers from Heartland Payment Systems, 7-Eleven, as well as supermarket chain Hannaford Brothers following indictment against him and two unidentified Russian last month.
Gonzalez and his alleged accomplices sold to another number, and coded data on magnetic stripes of blank cards and use the new cards to withdraw tens of thousands of dollars at a time from ATMs, according to the indictments. They conceal and launder their profits by using anonymous Internet-currency in the U.S. and abroad, and directing the money through bank accounts in Eastern Europe, court documents show.
In accordance with the terms of a plea bargain, Gonzalez faces up to 25 years in prison on charges of Boston and up to 20 years on the New York charges and will serve terms concurrently. He also faces a fine of not less than 500000.
With regard to restitution, Gonzalez agreed to give up his Miami condo, 2006 BMW 330i, Ring Tiffany Diamond, watch Rolex, and more than $ 1 million in cash, which was buried in his yard.
Sentencing is scheduled for December 8. Gonzalez's lawyer, Rene Palomino, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
