NFL bans Tweeting before, during and after games

National Football League had a love-hate relationship with social media.

Some teams tweeted fans when selecting players for the NFL draft in April. But last month, several teams NFL players said they could not chirp or text messages during a team function.

On Monday, the League announced that it had changed its social media policy to limit Twitter and social networks to use the players, coaches, league officials and even the media.

National Football League said it will allow players, coaches and other staff teams to participate in the social network during the season. Nevertheless, they are prohibited from using Twitter and updating profiles on Facebook and other social networks during the games.

In addition, they will not be allowed to tweet or update social networking profiles for 90 minutes before the game until after the game interview.

Regulation, even extend to people "representing" a player or coach for their personal accounts.

NFL does not just stop with the League itself, however. The organization also noted that the media attending the game will be prohibited from providing game updates via social networks.

"Longstanding policy of prohibiting play-by-play descriptions of NFL games in progress fully applicable to Twitter and other social media platforms, National Football League said in his speech. "Internet sites that can not post detailed information that brings the play from the field during the game.

"While the game is in progress, any form of payment in the game should be enough time delay and limited in scope (eg, score updates from the detailing is given only in quarterly updates of game), so the game coverage of the accredited organizations can not be used as a substitute or otherwise approximate, authorized play-by-play accounts.

The fact that the NFL will not allow Tweeting during games is not new. League instituted the policy for the players, after they began using the technology of landing in the celebrations. But the updated rules now apply only to those who are remotely involved in the game.

Why the NFL decided to change his policy now, is unknown. But, may have to update it after the Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco said in a recent Ustream chat room that he planned to circumvent the rules and chirp during the game.

He also could have something to do with Twitter account Donte Stallworth's. The player was suspended by the NFL after he was convicted of murder DUI and served 30 days in jail. His features Tweets from Twitter to discuss his suspension and imprisonment.

However, if Ochocinco or any other Tweets players during the game, it can be difficult for the NFL to ensure compliance with this rule. And because players can create accounts that the NFL might not even know about, it is doubtful that the League would be able to monitor all social media activity. We just have to wait until the season starts next week and see what happens when someone violates the rules.
